Job Summary

Sinfonia da Camera seeks a detail-oriented and musically knowledgeable individual to serve as the Orchestra Librarian & Operations Assistant. This hybrid role ensures the accurate preparation and distribution of orchestral music while supporting the ensemble’s administrative and logistical operations. The successful candidate will play a vital behind-the-scenes role in the smooth execution of rehearsals and performances.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Research and secure required editions and parts from appropriate sources (e.g., UIUC Music Library, publishers, rental agencies).  

  • Inspect and inventory all incoming materials for completeness.

  • Distribute music to string principals for marking, transfer markings to all string parts, and distribute music to full orchestra in a timely fashion. 

  • Scan and distribute practice copies. 

  • Attend all rehearsals and assist with set up and tear down as needed. 

  • Collect music after performances, ensure parts are clean, re-catalog or re-package scores for return to publisher. 

  • Assist with maintaining simple Excel spreadsheets, securing substitute orchestral personnel, editing advertising copy, document preparation, and other misc. duties as needed. 

  • Assist with set up for special events, such as fundraisers, auditions, or meetings, as needed. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to read music and understand musical markings, especially string bowings.

  • Familiarity with rental, purchase, and public domain orchestral music sources. 

  • Ability to work independently as well as coordinate with the Music Director, Executive Director, and all orchestral personnel.

  • Familiarity with Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Excel and Word.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and record-keeping skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Music. 

  • Substantial professional or educational experience in a classical musical ensemble.  

  • Prior experience as a Music Librarian and/or string instrumentalist.

Compensation

 $20-25 per hour, commensurate with experience. 

This part-time, hybrid role requires intensive work (30-40 hours) in preparation for a concert cycle. An additional 2-5 hours per week are required off-cycle.
